Plein air painting (painting outdoors) presents several unique challenges to the artist. Changing light conditions, weather and insects to name a few, not to mention translating the vast landscape onto a small canvas in a short length of time.
In this video (runtime, 2 hours, 20 minutes), Dan demonstrates
his step-by-step approach as he creates a plein air painting from start to finish in beautiful Ojai, California.
Join him as he takes you through his process and gives important principles for the plein air artist to remember. As
he develops his painting, he shares a simple approach that can help you achieve success with your own plein air paintings.

Jason Sacran DVD, "Painting the Effects of Late Light"
For more than a quarter of a century Matt
Smith has been painting the landscape of the southwest and has
received prestigious recognition for his work, including the
Robert Lougheed Award at the Prix de West Show, the Red Smith
Award from the National Museum of Wildlife Art and both Best of
Show and Artistic Merit awards at the Western Rendezvous of Art.
In return for all the guidance given him in earlier years
by contemporary landscape masters, he devotes time for workshops and
seminars. "After learning so much from artists I deeply admire, I feel
a responsibility to pass it on to others. I hope in some small way
this contributes to keeping traditions alive. Also, teaching helps me
convey my personal ideas and values about art."
Matt is one of the most sought after instructors, with
his workshops selling out months in advance. The idea of an
instructional video seemed like a natural progression. So here's your
chance to spend about 1 1/2 hours venturing with him into the Sonoran desert
where he will take you through his process of painting outdoors. Produced by Oak Creek Productions.
In this installment, the subject is his painting, "Winter Over
the San Juans." From start to finish Matt will guide you
through the process while sharing his experience on how to work from field
studies and photographic reference to create a painting in the studio.
The instructional section is 1 hour and 15 minutes with
an additional 12-minute
bonus section. The bonus section includes Matt discussing design and
composition examples plus a slide show on a selection of his field
studies. The disc is structured so that the viewer can select specific
starting points, which include 24 “scene selections”. Produced by Oak Creek Productions.
